Who is God? God is GOOD!
When we are considering whether to trust someone, we generally want to put our trust in someone who is good, not bad. If you have interacted in human relationships for any length of time, you probably have come to the realization that no one is completely good (or completely bad for that matter). Friends and family members have a blend of characteristics that we like and that we dislike. With God, it is entirely different than our human relationships because God is always good.
In 1 John 1:5 it says, “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.”
God shows us His goodness all throughout the Scriptures and if you ever struggle with doubt, as most humans will at some point, just go back and read about the torturous crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, God’s only Begotten Son. It becomes very obvious that Someone Who is willing to die for us is Good. That Someone is God.
Isaiah 53:5 says this about Jesus Christ, God’s Son, “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.”
This famous verse, John 3:16 tells us, ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Only Someone who is “good” would be willing to lay down His life on behalf of sinful humans. God is indeed GOOD.
As if that were not enough evidence, consider this verse, “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.” Nahum 1:7
It can be very difficult to see and feel the goodness of God when we are in the midst of terrible suffering. We can take comfort in the fact that this earthly life is very short, like a blip on a radar screen, and our eternal life with God will be forever. We must hold on, through faith, to the promise of God to bring us through each time of suffering and to know that God sees everything from outside of time and space, from beginning to end.
Isaiah 55:8-9 tell us this, ““For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.”
That God is good is can sometimes be difficult to fathom but God tells us all throughout His Word that He has a Great Plan for humans based on His love for us. He knows everything there is to know and we can trust Him to work out all the things that happen in our life for good. It says in Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Rest in God’s goodness today. When the world seems full of darkness, evil, and suffering, lift up your eyes to Jesus Christ and read through these verses. Better yet, memorize them. Memorizing Scripture and quoting it out loud is one of the best spiritual warfare weapons to use when the Enemy of our soul throws the fiery darts of lies and deception at us. Stand on the Truth. God IS GOOD!
