God is Merciful
God, the Creator of the whole universe and the Creator of every living being, is holy, righteous, just, and powerful. It is within God’s authority to punish rebellious beings who turn against him toward evil. The characteristic of God in this study is merciful, God is full of mercy.
The online dictionary definition of mercy is: “compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm.”
All throughout Scripture, we see the mercy of God. His incredibly deep love for us, His creation, moved Him to love us and to prepare a way for Him to forgive us. Our punishment has been averted, taken on by Jesus Christ. What incredible mercy.
In God’s mercy, He comforts us through our sufferings in this life.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
The Psalmist wrote often about the beautiful mercy of God:
Psalm 86:15 “But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.”
Psalm 119:156 “Great are Your mercies, O Lord; Revive me according to Your ordinances.”
In the New Testament, we also see many references to God’s mercy.
Luke 6:36 “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”
Titus 3:5 “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,”
We see the mercy of God through His unchanging love, His faithfulness to His promises, and His constant thoughts toward His people and His Church.
Lamentations 3:22-23 “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Deuteronomy 4:31 “For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them.”
Take some time, right now, to close your eyes and imagine the tender mercies of God as He smiles upon you. You are more loved than you can imagine by the One who created you and knew you before the foundations of the earth.
